Looking Back and Beyond ‘India’s Daughter’

Last year, on the 8th of March—International Women’s Day—India’s Daughter, directed by Leslee Udwin about the 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder case, was slated for release in both India and Britain simultaneously. While meant to honour both Jyoti Singh as well as the overwhelming public response to this atrocity, the film was banned in India before its release and condemned by several Indian politicians and public figures, including notable women’s right activists.
One year later, we mark International Women’s Day with an interview with the film-maker of India’s Daughter where she revisits the main controversies stirred up by the heated public debate surrounding the film.
